Gasteranthus atratus is a fascinating plant from the Gesneriaceae family, known for its unique dark mahogany leaves and cream-colored, vase-shaped flowers.

It is native to the high mountains of western Ecuador. It was discovered in the mid-1970s, but its natural habitat was later destroyed, making it a rare and unique plant to grow

• Light: Bright indirect sunlight
• Temperature: a minimum of  18°C in the growing season
• Watering: keep the soil moist but not wet
• Fertilizing: apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at 1/2 of the strength every 2 weeks during active growth
• Humidity: above 65%
• Soil: use a well-draining potting mix; a mix designed for African violets can work well
• Water: normal to moist water range
• Propagation: stem cuttings, leaf cuttings and from seeds
