Vriesea erythrodactylon

Vriesea erythrodactylon (É. Morren) É. Morren ex Mez — Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae. Common name “Red-fingered Vriesea,” referencing the red-tipped floral bracts.

Endemic to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica), where it inhabits a range of ecotypes; from epiphytic populations in mesic forest to plants growing terrestrially in light sand on shaded coastal dunes. That ecological plasticity is useful to know: this isn’t a strict canopy epiphyte like many Vriesea.

It tolerates both mounted and potted culture well, which makes it flexible for terrarium/vivarium use. Perfect for dart frog tanks with Oophaga pumilio as they contain a lot of water to rear the tadpoles.

Watering: keep the soil just moist during active growth and water more sparingly in winter
